About Alice

Alice - Educational 3D Computer Programming Freeware

About Alice
Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment available free of cost from Carnegie Mellon University providing students their first hands-on experience to object-oriented programming. The students will be able to create animations for telling a story or create interactive games or animations for class projects. Alice also helps students to learn the fundamental programming concepts.
The Alice interface is pretty simple and the objects required for the animation is readily available as a gallery which can be easily dragged and dropped to the stage or scene. These objects can be programmed by drag and drop of statements.

Minimum System Requirements
Desktop or laptop with minimum 1 GB RAM (2 or more recommended)
VGA graphics card capable of high (32 bit) color and at least 1024x768 resolution
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7 or Linux or Mac
JAVA JDK
Click on accept agreement and click on
Windows x8688.77 MB   jdk-7u11-windows-i586.exe
to download JDK for Windows 32 bit OS.
Install JDK  and then download and install Alice.

Where to get Alice
Alice can be downloaded freely from http://www.alice.org.
Click Downloads->Get Alice 3.1 (the latest version as on date). Better download the offline installer.

Music for your Alice Presentation

The Alice team has came out with a royalty-free sound library that you can use in the animations. On the page there's also a link so that  you can create your own sounds that are compatible with Alice.

““When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”” " Paulo Coelho"

My First proof of learning ALICE :)

I have started believing in this thought so firmly that I can swear by it...I think it will depend on how strong is the wanting.Yes, it has happened to me once again :)
When I finished with 54 projects for my school in Think quest international competition, I was a proud member of the international forum." Wow! I made it once again." I thought to myself, winning was not of prime concern as we were contented with the achievement of having completed and personally I was enriched with knowledge which I gathered by guiding projects of different subjects, indeed I was richer now.My friend asked "Shephali, what next, and I said I am thinking of learning Java!!!" ...She said," why ?How will it help in your school programs". I said," I don't know why...but I want to learn for next year’s Think quest as I want to submit application development projects successfully ..." She said," you are crazy...”.
The transformation of my dream into reality began when there was an "SMS"from Madhurya, Please check your mail... "This is Madhurya from Mrs. Kamal Peter team Oracle, Ma’am Please book your tickets as your name is recommended by Kamal Peter Ma'am for being a regional ambassador for "Alice" by oracle.”I did not understand what it meant but I knew 100% I was heading for something very interesting. It was followed by a mail from KVS and I booked the tickets that night itself. The first day when I came here I was told about the various programs which Oracle academy has to offer, “Unbelievable". I said to myself, "If I want I can learn java...!!!"
ALICE IN WONDERLAND ---THE WORLD OF ALICE... again fulfills my desire of assigning  digital stories  as I was in search of a software, which was user friendly and could help my students make animations and have fun with science, here I am finding  it in the form of ‘ALICE’...Alice will do it all I know, I had already explained to my tenth standard students the work we would be doing in second term and they were very happy...but now when I go back from the “ALICE TRAINING BY ORACLE AND KVS” and teach them to play on Alice and learn science I know they will be overjoyed, I can visualize the smile and chatter in my classrooms. Now if ever I am given an opportunity I can help all teachers make lesson plans in just any subject using "ALICE" and it will ease their work of assessing the evidence of learning through C.C.E.My class VII sections love 'Magic school bus,' and now when they will see that they can create their own Magic school bus, I am just looking forward to seeing their beaming faces and cheerful chatters…Hmmm More when we start the action in the classroom…..Description: https://mail.google.com/mail/images/cleardot.gif

Story telling through Alice

Alice 3

Creating Movies and Games as a Motivation for learning Programming thinking
In a global environment that is increasingly dependent on computing, it is critical that we our students should be familiar with programming concepts.
Introductory Computer Science courses often use examples and assignments from the business computing and systems building domains. These examples are intended as a foundation for computer science concepts in a domain that makes the problems relevant to students, yet many students do not begin to see the relevance of their computer science classes until they are ready for college.
Carnegie Mellon has created a programming environment, Alice, that allows students to learn basic computer science while creating animated movies and simple video games where students control the behaviors of 3D objects and characters in a virtual world.
In Alice, students construct programs by dragging and dropping tiles that represent words in a programming language; Alice removes the possibility for syntax errors, a common source of frustration for beginning programmers. Students can watch their programs execute, which enables students to see where they have made mistakes. Unlike many programming environments for novices, Alice allows students to gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in programming courses.

Ozymandias

Ozymandias Alice worlds created by first time users - Teachers at the TGT English In-service course on 13-14 June 2012. A part of their syllabus, the teachers have given their personal touch to the poem.

Ozymandias - P B Shelly

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".
